Car detailing does not have one universal package. It usually means more focused work than a routine wash, but the included tasks depend on the operator, the vehicle’s condition and whether the service is interior, exterior or both.
Common exterior detailing tasks
An exterior package may include some combination of:
- careful pre-wash and contact washing;
- wheel, arch and lower-body cleaning;
- removal of selected tar, iron or bonded contamination;
- cleaning around badges, grilles and trim;
- paint assessment;
- machine or hand polishing where specified;
- application of wax, sealant or another protection product.
These are examples, not a promise that every detail includes them. Paint correction, ceramic coatings and specialist restoration are often separate services requiring assessment.
Common interior detailing tasks
Interior work may include:
- vacuuming seats, carpets, mats and luggage areas;
- cleaning dashboard, console and interior trim;
- cleaning interior glass;
- working around vents, seams and storage areas;
- fabric or carpet extraction where appropriate;
- leather cleaning and conditioning using suitable products;
- targeted treatment for stains or odours.
Pet hair, severe staining, mould, biohazards and odour investigation can require additional time, specialist equipment or refusal of service. Tell the operator about the condition before booking.
What is often separate
Do not assume the following are included:
- scratch or dent repair;
- bodywork or paint spraying;
- multi-stage paint correction;
- ceramic coating installation;
- engine-bay work;
- headlight restoration;
- removal of seats or interior trim;
- guaranteed stain or odour removal.
A detailing business may offer some of these separately, but a package should state them explicitly.
Valeting and detailing can overlap
In Ireland, “valet” is widely used for packages combining exterior and interior cleaning. “Detailing” often signals more time or a more targeted process, but operators use the terms differently.
Compare the task list, not the marketing label. A clearly described valet can be more suitable than a vaguely described detail if it directly addresses your needs.
Why condition affects the quote
Vehicle size is only one factor. Embedded dirt, pet hair, delicate materials, access to tight spaces and the requested finish all affect the work involved.
A responsible operator may need to inspect the vehicle before confirming scope, time or price. Photographs can help with an initial estimate, but they may not reveal every condition.
Questions to ask before booking
- Is the package interior, exterior or both?
- Which tasks are definitely included?
- Which conditions trigger an extra charge?
- Is polishing included, and if so, what outcome is intended?
- How long will the vehicle be required?
- Does the service require access to electricity, water or a covered space?
- Are there restrictions for matte paint, wraps, coatings or delicate materials?
- What result cannot be guaranteed?
How to compare two packages
Write the desired outcome in one sentence—for example, “routine exterior clean plus a deep clean of fabric seats”—and ask each operator to map its package to that outcome.
Compare included tasks, exclusions, time and condition assumptions side by side. That produces a fairer comparison than choosing the cheapest package with the most impressive name.
On the car detailing page, look for businesses with detailing clearly listed as a service. You can also use the near-me finder to compare nearby options before opening the relevant county listing. Current packages and prices can change, so confirm the details directly before booking.
